Talking to your tribe is a core element in successful tribe building. And despite the popularity of social media (Facebook, Twitter, you name it), email still holds its place.
The way Magnet Platform helps you with this is through a solid integration with one of the leading mailing list software, Mailchimp. We keep your contacts in sync, and give you tools for encouraging your members to join your free newsletter to receive your news and updates.
In this documentation article, we’ll go through the Mailchimp integration and the settings you have at your use for customizing it.
Enabling the Mailchimp integration
To enable Magnet Platform’s Mailchimp integration, you first need a Mailchimp account. Click here to sign up for one if you don’t have one yet.
After signing up, visit your Mailchimp account page to get a Mailchimp API key.
- In the Mailchimp Dashboard, click on your name in the top-right corner to open a drop-down menu. In that drop-down menu, click on Account.
- On the account page, click on Extras and in the drop-down menu, select API keys.
- Click on Create A Key to create a new API key.
- When the API key has been added to your list of API keys, copy the key.
Now, in a separate browser tab, open your Magnet Platform admin panel and navigate to Membership > Options. On that page, click on the Mailing Lists tab.
On this tab, enter the API key you just created in the MailChimp API Key field. Save the settings.
Your Mailchimp account has now been linked to Magnet Platform and we can start configuring the free newsletter.
Set Up Your Free Newsletter Subscription Options
Now that you have successfully linked your Mailchimp account, you can select the free mailing list to use as your free newsletter on the Mailing Lists options tab.
If you haven’t created a mailing list yet, do that in Mailchimp, then return to the Magnet Platform options page.
Right below the API key field, you’ll find a dropdown menu item titled Ask free subscribers to join mailing list. In the dropdown, you’ll see all of your mailing lists. Select the one you’d like to use as your free mailing list to encourage your users to sign up to.
Save the settings. Now, everyone who registers an account on your site will be offered an option to also sign up to your email newsletter.
Below these options, you’ll also find some further options that can be used to customize how your site’s users can join your list and the mailing list related texts they’ll see on your Magnet Platform website.

Viewing the Newsletter Subscription Status
Magnet Platform keeps track of your users’ newsletter subscription statuses. To view a specific user’s info, click on that user’s email address on the Membership > Customers page.
On the first, User Information, tab, you’ll find a section that looks like this:
The view shows you the user’s current subscription status as well as his or her full subscription history.
The context column shows some additional information about where the subscription, or the change to it, originated. For example, in the screen shot above,
account-subscribe tells us that the user initiated the subscription flow by clicking on the Subscribe button on his account page. Then, we see that a bit later, Mailchimp sent the site the information that the user has confirmed his email address and is now a newsletter subscriber.
